One of the city’s landmark, the castle was formerly a frontier
stronghold and the later residence of the Hungarian kings.
Towering on the Castle Hill, 85 metres above the Danube, it saw
its golden age in the 18th century during the reign of Maria
Theresa of Austria, who frequently resided here. |

The castle fell into decay after the return of the Hungarian
kings back to Buda in 1783. In 1811, it suffered from a devasting fire.
The castle remained in ruins during 150 years and was
reconstructed only in 1953. |
