In 1971 an abandonned 41-hectare military camp on the eastern
side of Christianshavn was taken over by squatters who proclai-
med it the ‘Free State’ of Christiania, subject to their own laws.
A lot of hippies joined quickly the project and the government, bowing
to public pressure, let the community continue as a
‘social experiment’. Christiania remains controversial (the sale
of soft drugs is allowed) but the residents still defend their self-governing,
ecology-oriented and tolerant values. |
